Since its inception in the early 2000s, Grime music has echoed the young black British experience of living in impoverished areas, but in what ways did it reflect and influence how those youngers interacted with each other on a romantic level?

As part of his Deconstruction of Roadman Culture series, Caleb Femi’s nostalgic documentary about teenage relationships in the early 2000s brings together a group of young black Londoners who, at the time, were immersed in a new sound that germinated from the estates and pavements they called home. Heartbreak and Grime is an illustrative account told through poetry, conceptual visuals and conversation of individuals whose stories are incredibly unique. As each person recounts their teenage experiences of trying to make sense of romantic feelings and their place in the gender paradigms that govern relationships, a wider conversation of how Grime perpetuated patterns of thoughts and behaviours of a deeply problematic nature such as sex, misogyny, hyper-masculinity, sexual abuse etc.
